Each year, the U.S. surgeon general initiates a Call to Action to stimulate nationwide initiatives to solve a major public health problem. In 2008 that call was to reduce the number of cases of DVT, deep vein thrombosis. DVT is a potentially fatal blood clot that forms in the deep vein system of the lower leg and can occur from sitting in the same position for an extended period of time.
According to the American Heart Association, DVT occurs in about two million Americans annually, hospitalizing nearly 600,000 of them. So if the surgeon general thought it was a big enough problem – and I certainly agree, I thought this would be a good place for us to start.
What is the first thing you should do to protect yourself? Talk to your doctor. If you’re older, very over weight, pregnant, or a frequent long distance traveler – you are especially vulnerable. However, if you aren’t in these categories, you still need to keep reading. Anyone can get DVT under the right circumstances. DVT does not discriminate; it can strike anyone regardless of age, race or gender.
Wearing compression products is one preventive measure to reduce your chances. These types of products place the greatest compression at the ankles where it’s needed most, helping improve circulation. Your doctor can discuss with you other actions you can take.
